Which CRM does ChatGPT recommend when a buyer asks it to choose? I put 100 CRM questions to it, logged out with web search on, and HubSpot finished first. The more useful finding was the shape of the answers: a typical one read like a decision tree, with a different CRM waiting at the end of each branch.
This is my read of High Salience’s second teardown, run like the first one on project management software; every table is on the full CRM teardown.
The CRM brands ChatGPT picked most
The CRM brands ChatGPT picked most were the same four names in answer after answer: HubSpot, Pipedrive, Zoho CRM and Salesforce.
| Brand | Appears in | Recommended in | Picked in |
|---|---|---|---|
| HubSpot | 75 | 74 | 69 |
| Pipedrive | 55 | 54 | 53 |
| Zoho CRM | 54 | 52 | 45 |
| Salesforce | 47 | 46 | 37 |
| Freshsales | 27 | 26 | 19 |
| monday CRM | 16 | 16 | 11 |
| Microsoft Dynamics 365 | 15 | 14 | 13 |
| Copper | 13 | 13 | 6 |
| Attio | 10 | 10 | 9 |
| Close | 10 | 10 | 9 |
Nearly every brand that appeared got a fit, so watch the last column, where an answer starts giving advice.
The condition attached to each CRM
The condition attached to each CRM barely changed from one answer to the next. A typical answer gave a comparison table, then a short list: HubSpot for sales, marketing and service together, Pipedrive for a simple pipeline, Zoho CRM on a budget, Salesforce for complex enterprise sales.
Salesforce had the tightest condition. All 46 answers that recommended it put Salesforce on a line with enterprise, complex, large, customization, scale or grow. HubSpot’s was nearly as steady. Of the 74 answers that recommended HubSpot, 61 named it on a line that paired marketing with sales or service.
Salesforce was recommended in 46 answers, and each one came with a big-company condition.
The four also travel as a pack. Three or more of them were picked together in 37 answers, and at least two in 66 (counting every recommendation, 44 and 70).
How often a named CRM became a pick
How often a named CRM became a pick varied a lot. Pick rate here is the share of a brand’s appearances that were picks.
When Pipedrive showed up, it was nearly always a pick. Copper sat at the far end: recommended in all 13 answers that named it, picked in 6. No brand named ten or more times had a lower pick rate. Attio and Close rest on ten appearances each, too few to read much into.
HubSpot is the default when a buyer asks for one CRM
HubSpot was the default when a buyer asked for one CRM outright. Twenty of the questions were direct requests, and 18 of those 20 ended in a pick from the 52-brand dictionary. HubSpot was among the picks in 17 of them, with Pipedrive at 16, Salesforce at 11 and Zoho CRM at 8. The other two, a real estate brokerage and a law firm, got no dictionary recommendation.
Vertical CRM questions crowd out the big four
Vertical CRM questions crowded out the big four, and twice they cleared the field. For real estate agents, ChatGPT named specialists such as Follow Up Boss, Lofty and BoldTrail, and none of the 52 dictionary brands appeared; the brokerage question went the same way. A law firm got legal specialists such as Clio Grow and Lawmatics, with Salesforce and HubSpot mentioned only as generic CRMs it needs more than. Insurance agents got five specialists plus HubSpot. For financial advisors and nonprofits, Salesforce held on through its industry clouds and was picked.
Google rankings and ChatGPT recommendations overlap more in CRM
Google rankings and ChatGPT recommendations overlapped more in CRM than in project management, but most recommendations still went to brands that didn’t rank. Out of 387 recommended brand mentions, 269 (70 percent) went to brands whose own site sat outside Google’s top ten for that query. For picks it was 226 of 330, or 68 percent. Project management, coded the same way, was at 85 percent (398 of 468).
CRM’s leading brands rank with their own pages much more often. Where HubSpot was recommended, its own site ranked in the top ten for 31 of the 74 queries, and Pipedrive’s ranked for 25 of 54. Asana managed 12 of 73 in project management. A tighter overlap fits the idea that the model reads what ranks, but one category can’t prove it.
The sources behind ChatGPT’s CRM answers
The sources behind ChatGPT’s CRM answers split between vendor pages and a long tail of small sites. Counted one per cited domain per answer, there were 320 citation events across 138 domains. Vendors’ own sites took 136 of them (42 percent), and hubspot.com led all domains at 37. TechRadar topped the independent publishers with 8, while G2 (6) and Capterra (5) did no better than small sites like crmnewspaper.com (6). Reddit and Wikipedia were not cited in any of the 100 answers in this sample.
The number I’d show anyone who reports rankings alone: only 26 percent of citation events (83 of 320) pointed to a domain that also ranked in Google’s top ten for the same query.
How I ran the CRM test
I ran the CRM test on the same setup as the project management teardown.
- Queries
- 100 CRM questions (30 category, 30 comparison, 20 alternative, 20 recommendation)
- Surface
- ChatGPT, logged out, web search forced on, US English, via the DataForSEO scraper
- Runs
- One per query, collected September 17, 2026
- Coding
- Two AI readers (Claude agents) working independently from a written protocol, a third settling disagreements (codebook v2.0)
- Agreement
- 98.6 percent of brand codes, 99.3 percent at the recommended level
- Dictionary
- 52 CRM brands, fixed before collection
- Control
- Google’s top ten organic results, same queries and window, via the DataForSEO SERP API
To run it on your own category, see how to check which brands ChatGPT recommends.
What CRM brands can take from this
What CRM brands can take from this starts with the condition. ChatGPT already gives each big brand a case, so the gap worth closing is between being given a case and being picked for it, which Pipedrive nearly always was and Copper often wasn’t. Comparison pages come next. With both sides recommended in 28 of 30 head-to-heads, the model will tell buyers when the other brand fits better, so it may as well be reading your version. Check the one-word versions of your category; a real estate or law firm qualifier removed every dictionary brand from the recommendations. And measure the ranking overlap per category: 70 percent here against 85 in project management is a pair of readings, not a law.
